For two-cylinder engines, you should test each cylinder to make sure you do not have a bad connection in the HV wires. crank the motor or mag by hand and every 4th click, you should see a spark at the plug. The coil consists of a primary winding (coil of copper wire) and a secondary winding inside of the housing and in very close proximity to each other. On the John Deere “E” engine with a gear drive magneto it was necessary to spin the flywheel to get a spark. In my opinion you should go back to the factory mag.Keep your eyes open as they do sometimes come up for sale on ebay.As for mags being re buildt i would go with Mainely Magneto's.Their are also others who do work on mags such as Marks magneto,Rebuildt mags (Rudy Calin),Kevin's Magneto Service,Adrian's Magneto Service,Lightning magneto (Mitch … I rebuilt the machine 7 years ago or so and magneto is working great. A weak reading could indicate a magnet that has lost some of its strength. Engines using the WICO “EK” magneto should produce as good a spark as the impulse coupling type using the same procedure when the armature is tripped. You will need a multimeter set to Ohms for this test. If they are different, your stator is defective. Learn how to properly test your magneto, stator or pickup coils. If the magneto is generating the proper ohms, check to make sure the spark plug is working properly. My Farmall H has the same setup.
