For two-cylinder engines, you should test each cylinder to make sure you do not have a bad connection in the HV wires. crank the motor or mag by hand and every 4th click, you should see a spark at the plug. The coil consists of a primary winding (coil of copper wire) and a secondary winding inside of the housing and in very close proximity to each other. On the John Deere “E” engine with a gear drive magneto it was necessary to spin the flywheel to get a spark. In my opinion you should go back to the factory mag.Keep your eyes open as they do sometimes come up for sale on ebay.As for mags being re buildt i would go with Mainely Magneto's.Their are also others who do work on mags such as Marks magneto,Rebuildt mags (Rudy Calin),Kevin's Magneto Service,Adrian's Magneto Service,Lightning magneto (Mitch … I rebuilt the machine 7 years ago or so and magneto is working great. A weak reading could indicate a magnet that has lost some of its strength. Test every lead of the stator’s connector and note the readings. if not, and the point is clean and wires not touching … Posted: Fri Mar 09, 2012 7:45 am Post subject: Re: how to test the coil on a magneto: One way to test is when its running use a hair dryer heat it up and see if then the tractor will stop then check for spark quick then after it cools see if it has spark again.Ialso check … pull out the plugs, put one in a plug wire and set the plug on the bare metal case so it is grounded. The reading of each combination should be the same (test leads 1-2, 2-3, and 3-1). Ground Test… The Magneto is a Wico Model X, Spec# XH1042, Serial# XC061653. Ignition coils supply the distributor with high voltage electricity to fire the spark plugs. parts and information is available on line. I like it better than my other side mount 8n. Posted: Mon Oct 30, 2017 8:15 am Post subject: Re: 9N magneto question: I have an 8n with an industrial engine in it with a magneto. I cannot get any spark to attempt to fire and believe it could be an issue with the Magneto. Ohms Test. I'm pretty sure that is a positive ground electrical system. Engines using the WICO “EK” magneto should produce as good a spark as the impulse coupling type using the same procedure when the armature is tripped. You will need a multimeter set to Ohms for this test. If they are different, your stator is defective. Learn how to properly test your magneto, stator or pickup coils. If the magneto is generating the proper ohms, check to make sure the spark plug is working properly. My Farmall H has the same setup. If the magneto is generating the proper ohms, check to make sure the spark plug is working properly. A weak reading could … If its any more than that, I'll need to know if you have a magneto or battery coil ignition. The main tools you will need to do these tests are 1) The Service Manual for your particular bike 2) an inexpensive multi-meter to measure ohms of resistance. Low tension magnetos are more difficult to check. This works for breaker point and CDI type ignition systems.
